Vault Professional is a product data management (PDM) application that provides a practical and modular approach to controlling your design data. It bridges the gap between CAD data and the manufacturing process. Autodesk Vault consists of two main components: the client and the server. Additional components, such as plug-ins, file servers, and job processors, help create a cohesive data management ecosystem.

Autodesk Vault Professional Client allows you to perform document management functions, such as checking files in and out or copying designs. The server stores master copies of all your documents and designs. By storing all of your data in a common, centralized location, you can easily share and manage information with your design team. This centralized location is known as the vault. When you launch the Vault app for the first time, you must select the vault you want to sign in to before you can start managing your data.

• Relational databases store information about files. Information stored in the database includes the current file state, file edit history, and file attribute data.
• Storing file information in a database provides a scalable, secure, and high-performance platform for recording file relationships and history. File information and relationships can also be searched, queried, and reported.
• Vault maintains a copy of each version of the file and saves them in the file store in a proprietary configuration. The file store is considered a self-contained system. Do not reconfigure files in the file store or edit any files directly from the file store.
• Separate software components installed for server and client applications.
