The EZkeys Mellotoon is based on the Mellotron* keyboard that debuted in the early 1960s. This unique instrument was the first of its kind to include real instrument samples, but unlike modern digital samplers, the Mellotron got them from a magnetic tape loop running inside the keyboard. It came with a variety of sounds for piano, strings, flutes, brass, and is perhaps best described as the first “band in a box.” Naturally, it was a revelation from the start. Pioneers included The Beatles, Moody Blues, and King Crimson, who immortalized the Mellotron’s signature sound in numerous hits. Today, this historic instrument is enjoying a resurgence in many genres.

The EZkeys Mellotoon captures the essence of this unique keyboard and comes with 15 distinct instruments, carefully sampled directly from the Mellotron* M400 using a combination of direct and amplified signals. What's more, it includes a rich collection of custom effects and chain presets, giving you a fresh and creative start to a seemingly endless treasure trove of inspiring sounds.

A M400 Mellotron* recording was carefully sampled at Studio 9, Sveriges Radio, through a vintage amp and using vintage preamps, peripherals and premium microphones.
