Visual Studio Tools for Office Runtime includes a number of unmanaged DLL files that Office applications use to load runtimes and Office solutions. While you should never work with these DLLs directly, knowing the purpose of these DLLs can help you better understand the architecture of Office solutions.

This download installs Visual Studio Tools for Office Runtime, which is required to run Microsoft Office-based solutions built with Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 and later supported versions of Visual Studio. This is an update to previous versions of the runtime.

When you install Office, the required version of the Visual Studio Tools for Office Runtime runtime is installed with Office. For example, when you install a 64-bit version of Office on a 64-bit version of Windows, the 64-bit version of the Visual Studio Tools for the Office Runtime is also installed.

Visual Studio Tools for Office Runtime includes main parts:

• Office extensions for the .NET Framework. These components are managed assemblies that provide a communication layer between your solution and Microsoft Office applications. For more information, see Understanding Office Extensions for the .NET Framework .
• Office Solution Loader. This component is a collection of unmanaged DLL files that Office applications use to load your runtime and solutions.
