Sonic Charge Bitspeek is a real-time stimulus linear prediction codec effect. Chances are you've never heard of "linear prediction," even though most of us use it every day when talking on our cell phones. Linear predictive coding is a speech compression technology that appeared in commercial products in the 70s and was implemented in several popular talking toys in the early 80s.
Sonic Charge has applied this technology to create a VST/AU effects plug-in that analyzes audio, extracts several parameters (including pitch, volume, and formant data), then resynthesize sounds using a simple oscillator, noise, and filter architecture. It added several playback parameters to adjust the pitch and timbre quality of the audio as well as support for MIDI and a beat-synchronized "format freeze effect". Although it only has a few simple controls, this box can make a variety of sounds from inexpensive talking toys to high-end vocoder and talk box effects.
