Cherry Audio Synthesizer Expander Module is a free emulation of Oberheim's classic standalone synthesizer module of the same name. First released in 1974, the monophonic, keyboardless module was designed as a companion to one of the first digital sequencers, the Oberheim DS-2. Soon after, Oberheim linked multiple Synthesizer Expansion Modules to early digitally scanned keyboards to create some of the first polyphonic synthesizers, used by legendary artists including Joe Zawinul. , used by Steve Porcaro, Styx and Jan Hammer of Toto.

Despite being a simple mono, the Synthetic Expansion Module possesses unique sound quality thanks to its 12 dB/oct state variable filter. With low-pass, band-pass, high-pass and notch modes, this versatile filter is the star of the show. We've recreated it exactly here with a Phasor filter and effects section programmed by award-winning synth designer Mark Barton (MRB).
